    ABOUT

i-Tree is a peer-reviewed software suite from the USDA Forest Service that quantifies the structure of urban and rural forests and the environmental and economic benefits trees provide. First released in August 2006, it is delivered through a cooperative partnership in which the Forest Service and the Davey Tree Expert Company share funding, alongside partners including the Arbor Day Foundation, the International Society of Arboriculture, Casey Trees and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. The tools and technical support are free. The suite is organised around individual trees, canopy areas and planting projects. MyTree and i-Tree Design estimate benefits for one or a few trees. i-Tree Eco, the flagship Windows desktop application, analyses complete or sample inventories to report pollution removal, carbon storage and sequestration, avoided runoff, building energy effects and pest risk. i-Tree Canopy estimates land and tree cover by classifying random points on Google aerial imagery. i-Tree Landscape, OurTrees, i-Tree Planting and i-Tree Species support canopy prioritisation, planting forecasts and species selection. i-Tree Eco is adapted for the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Mexico, South Korea, Colombia, Japan, New Zealand and most of Europe. Users elsewhere can submit local data through i-Tree Database, while MyTree and Canopy can be used internationally. In December 2025 the i-Tree team announced that Forest Service funding for the partnership had been indefinitely halted. As of May 2026 the tools remain live, supported by Davey, project grants and one-time funding, and the team says it will give at least six months' notice before any core tool is taken offline.
